Simone Novik shares her experience at the 2011 Deloitte National Leadership Conference!

Looking back on the amazing events of this conference, I am so happy that it was conducted at the end of summer, it was a nice last hoorah. The beauty of this conference was that it was 100% casual. The conference began on Wednesday August 26 when we were picked up downtown by a coach bus. The ride down to Deerhurst was about 2 hours that was used for introductions and power naps. Once we arrived at the beautiful Deerhurst resort we were greeted by managers and partners from Deloitte offices Canada wide. We were able to sit down in teams that were assigned by solving a riddle which would be the teams we would compete with in the days to come. Before the activities began we were addressed by our amazing deans/leaders of the conference as well as Glenn Ives, the current chair of Deloitte, who spoke passionately about his adventure in life and at Deloitte and what we should consider in the decisions we make with regards to the impact it will have on our own life adventure.

Following this spectacular speech we were immersed into the first activity, a scavenger hunt. We were given a list of photos that our team needed to take and the team that had the best/most photos would win. These were no easy photos, my team ended up having to take a picture doing synchronized swimming in the pool, talk about embarrassing. After the excitement of the activity we were given time to clean up for dinner and the evening activities. The food at this conference I must say was absolutely delicious, I could have definitely gotten used to it.

After dinner we had casino night, in which we played everything from 21 to poker and the more chips one had the more raffle tickets they got, sadly luck was not on my side that night. The next day we started with CEO Alan MacGibbon giving us a great prospective on the opportunities at Deloitte, as well as enforce the fact that Deloitte was the only firm in the professional services industry to be entirely bilingual. Following the CEO’s amazing speech we were addressed by managing partners across all service lines including assurance and advisory, financial advisory, tax, enterprise risk and consulting which was amazing because it gave the students a glimpse into what their opportunities were at Deloitte.

The speeches were all separated by team building activities such as navigating a blindfolded team member to a certain colored ball and getting them to drop that ball into a hole. The evening was spent on a beach where there was a beautifully arranged beach barbeque that was followed by an awesome dance party, and I must say Deloitte people can really dance!

On the last day the service lines that had not yet been addressed were and the day was concluded with an awards ceremony for the top performing teams, my team made 3rd, go Triumphant Adventurers! Leaving the conference was very bitter sweet as the bonds formed in 3 days were very strong, not with just students but with the Deloitte staff as well. This experience has definitely created some amazing life long memories!
